Some might say that country and rap music should be mutually exclusive pursuits. Colt Ford, who has established himself as an artist blending those genres into a rousing mix, begs to differ, and particularly with the suggestion that he’s breaking new ground.
“Recitation, talking records, have been around long before me,” said Ford, speaking from his home near Athens, Georgia. “It’s funny when people say stuff like I created something new. ‘Smoke That Cigarette’ by Tex Williams, that was in the…’40s. That’s been around forever. That’s exactly what I do.
“Johnny Cash did talking records and so did Hank, Jerry Reed, Charlie Daniels. Look what (Toby Keith’s) ‘Red Solo Cup’ is doing right now. How is that any different than anything I do?”
